Day 47 - Flagler Beach to Orange City

A bunch of us got up early to watch the sun come up over the Atlantic. The sun rise was a bit disappointing, so we just drank our champagne and watched the light get brighter, not quite as cool as the lightning the night before. Then it was on to breakfast and back to the hotel for naps. We finally got on the road at 10:30 – with one last stop to look at the Atlantic before turning inward. The road curved and meandered for many miles, but finally we broke out into the open and onto the highway for some basic riding.

We were only about seven miles from camp, but up ahead dark clouds were swirling and we saw lightning. Hungry, we decided to stop at a Burger King for food and protection from the impending storm. We barely got our food and it started to rain – a downpour! The rain was swirling and going every which way. It would kind of slow up and then it would kick into high again, so after we had been there for almost 2 hours, we decided to head out at 4:00 p.m. no matter what. At 4:00 we left, after pouring a couple of inches of rain out of Bob’s handlebar bag. The rain had let up some, but after one look at camp, we were off to the nearest motel. Who wants to be miserable the last night on the road? Sig had already checked into a suite at this little place, so there was plenty of room for a bunch of us – and space to hang out all our wet and soggy gear.
